The school of thought that "if you're going into a war/attack situation, beat the **** out of them or don't go at all" was fairly strong a short time ago. I kind of feel it is unfortunately what must happen now. Wage a war to submission in order to truly end it.
Bad part is that the resentment will last for generations... but I think that was there already anyway.
